Overall I like the product
I've had this unit for 2 winters and overall I have to say we like it. It does a decent job of keeping the humidity up in the house during the winter months. There are two drawbacks that I can see with the unit.
First, it's expensive to run, essentially you're boiling water to make steam with electricity. That takes a decent amount of electric. Here in Western Pennsylvania, electric rates are pretty average for the country so I am guessing you're looking at $25 a month to run the unit.
Next, the canisters are ridiculously expensive. They run between $60 and $80 each. The first time I replaced one, I could help but feel ripped off when I saw a plastic bottle with basically a piece of metal and two wires. Aprilaire is careful to seal the canisters so you can't open them up and clean them and use them over again. I have city water and 1 canister lasts me an entire winter, your mileage may vary.
A word of caution, trying to run the unit for an extended...

Depending on the quality of your water, expect to replace this once a winter. This is my third Whole house humidifier and this canister is the way to go! Just replace it and your done. You don't want to have to clean the build up on "other" types, especially with hard water.
A lot less expensive than buying from dealer.
Canister is fairly simple to replace and I can save not only on the cost of the canister but also the installation cost.
